On our daily walk in the afternoon we always seem to have an incident. Whether it is Lily jumping up and latching on to a woman's coat as she walked by, wiggling so hard to get free of her leash to attack another dog that she manages to squirm out of her collar, or today when we were walking past a hedge and Lily lunged under it as fast as she lunged at the poor unsuspecting woman or any cat that happens to cross her path. When I pulled her out stuck in her jaw - limp - was poor little Nick (the mouse - it rhymed with quick so that is why we chose Nick).
Now, normally to avoid future vomitation anything Lilly picks up to eat on a walk is followed quickly by a dive of my hand down her throat to retrieve it. So it was a good thing Lily let the poor thing down on the grass because I was not about to do a throat evacuation this time.
Anyway, soon after she put it down...the poor mouse pulsed in pain as it took its last breaths. Yes, I actually felt bad, but what was I going to do to put the poor thing out of its misery? Let Lily finish the job and then deal with regurgitated mouse guts plastered against my computer screen, rugs, Lacey, or the bed when her stomach refuses it as it does everything other than her Lamb and Rice for sensitive stomachs? Or should I have stamped on it with my foot and actually felt the bones crush as I shove it into the rain softened lawn?
I don't think so.
I chose to just walk away - but not after snapping this little photo to remember the moment, of course.
Thanks Lily.
that is so gross, what a picture. I once saw a bird hit a window and I had to wait until it died I didn't dare touch it or hit it with a shovel or step on it or anything so I know how you feel. I wouldn't even touch it after it died I got a dust pan and just couln't do it then jason came home and picked it up with his fingers.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I was able to instill compassion in my children. : ) I too, think dead and dying birds and mice are disgusting, but the act of dying is always hard to watch.
ReplyDeleteHere is my tribute to poor Nick
Nick nack paddy wack
give your dog a bone
If Lily would have had one
he might have left Nick alone : )
